The Science Behind "Trainers Special"

An insight into the science behind "Trainers Special"-:

  • Food Conversion i.e. the removal and utilisation of specific nutrients from ingested food matter, is the starting point for all good health and is improved with the provision of scFOS i.e. fructose Oligiosaccharides in this product. The molecules of scFOS are able to stand the normal digestive processes until they reach the hindgut. Here, beneficial bacteria including Bifido are able to split the molecules and utilise them, providing energy for their proliferation at the expensive of pathogenic bacteria. A vibrant and efficient hindgut flora is essential for the fermentation and complete digestion of forage allowing nutrient release and utilisation. Without this, toxins may arise that can cause a range of problems including a propensity towards Laminitis in certain horses where forage is not completely and correctly “digested”.

  • Copper is one of a number of cations with metabolic functions that are essential to a horses performance and well-being. One specific function is to catalyse the atoms of Iron onto the haemoglobin molecule and hence ensure efficient oxygen provision to all parts of the body including the muscles. Normally, the main stores of Copper are in the Liver, but being a "transition" metal, it is chemically highly reactive. When the soil has a Molybdenum content because of the underlying geology and has a pH that is alkaline, it becomes available to the forage or even the cereals grown on this land. Copper, Molybdenum and Sulphur and to a certain extent Iron react to form complex molecules. These reactions take place in the hindgut. Particularly the Copper-Molybdenum-Sulphur complex has such a high tendency to form, that a continuous intake of Molybdenum from forage or other feedstuffs will deplete the Liver of Copper and Copper and from the circulating essential Copper-enzymes. The net result is an animal seriously out of condition even when fed the usual Copper supplementation. The forms of Copper used in "Trainers Special" take account these potential problems by using Copper Amino Acid Chelates that are absorbed before the hindgut and other forms of Copper to minimise these "complex" problems.

  • Anti-oxidation is as much a requirement of life as respiration itself. Every breathing organism produces "free radicals" from the oxidation processes that are essential to sustaining life. These "free radicals" (often referred to as "peroxides" ) are responsible for most of the non-pathogenic degenerative problems horses have. Normally all animals, including mammals, have their own mechanisms to help control these situations (the efficiency of their functions often being directly related to the type and quality of nutritional intake). Horses, when under hard training, racing and the associated stressful conditions generate more "free radicals" than their own normal "repair system" can generally cope with. Hence the problems that can arise range from being simply a " bit off-colour" to pronounced muscle and other serious problems. "Trainers Special" contains a number of phyto derived antioxidants and minerals essential for aiding the optimum operation of the “repair system. e.g. Selenium, that is often deficient in pasture and is essential for the body as a co-factor with the enzyme Glutathione peroxidase in the exclusion of damaging peroxides from the body’s cells.
