Over-feeding a horse can cause a number of problems, including LAMINITIS (though this is not the only cause). Excess food, which is often from cereal-based feedstuffs, can provide the digestive system with more nutrients than the horse requires or that it can adequately cope with in a given time span. The result can be that in the hind-gut the balance of the beneficial versus the pathogenic bacteria can be disturbed with the latter gaining the ascendancy and inadequate digestion. The toxins produced can then potentially pass into the blood stream and into the delicate laminae leading to laminitis.
